Supply Chain Competency Management

Supplier Relationship Managers, Category Line Manager, and the supplier’s Account Managers are all crucial to the success of the global Oil & Gas Supply Chain. These individuals represent a unique discipline responsible for supporting the global network of forecasting, ordering and delivering products and services across the entire supply chain, from raw materials to end customers. Specifically, supply chain managers engage in the design, planning, execution, control, and supervision of supply chain activities with the objectives of creating net value, building a competitive infrastructure, leveraging worldwide logistics, synchronizing supply with demand, and measuring performance globally. If the Operators Supply Chain and Category Line managers do not have the necessary skills and competencies to manage and negotiate with their supplier counterparts then a significant percentage of the value of the partnering approach gets lost during the process.

Operators owe it to themselves to ensure that all of those involved in the supply chain have the necessary skills and competencies to manage and negotiate at the level that they are responsible for. Any failure on this will ensure leakage and ultimately could harm the Operator – Supplier Relationship.
